This blog includes excerpts from my book entitled The Lover's Gaze: Rumi's Guide for Lovers and Spiritual Seekers. In it I try to provide balanced (not too literal, yet not diverging from the original Persian) translations and commentary on the poetry and practical philosophy of Rumi, the Persian Sufi Mystic and Poet. The translations in this blog are copyrighted. If you wish to use them send me an email and I will need to verify usage then send you a formal email of permission of usage.

Oh God may you never separate this union
My Lord, never turn this union into separation.
Don't make the happy lovers weep.
Keep the garden of the soul
The garden of our lives green and plush
Don't target your wrath at these drunkards in the garden of love
Don't come like autumn upon the branches and leaves
Vasl is a state of union and hejran is its opposite state: one of separation and longing.
In Farsi, God is spoken to reverently, but directly speaking to Him, an intimate Friend.
Rumi starts out with a supplication to maintain the union, the good, the state of union between those whom Love has made "head happy": happiness in the head literally, as a result of experiencing Love.
He then proceeds to describe, through a string of metaphors, the scenarios he begs God to keep intact.Keeping the garden of life luscious green, not targeting those drunk with love in the garden of love, don't bring the autumn that turns the leaves brown and dry, don't dry up and break the branches of this green garden of love, don't make these people empty handed and wandering the streets, homeless.

Look inside my heart - Ode 931
look inside my heart, moonlight beauty,
For you will find yourself there
night and day I attend to you without fail
So spare a glance at my heart
The boisterous joy in my heart
Cannot be contained in this world
For you comfort hearts
In your tender peaceful way
Whoever feels the warmth
of the light of your sun,
How can they not be courageous
How can they be hesitant?
If my heart knows no sorrow
it is because you have granted joy
If I give tithings to the poor
It is from your hand
Your generosity, that it flows
The thought of you empowers me
And repels all dangers from me
What thoughtshape is my body
And what limbs does it have?
That shapeless Thought
Casts me and a thousand others like me
Into the ocean of shapes and signs
For the lover only seeks
The state of Absorption into the Beloved -- Fanaa
The unclothed will wear the
sun's garments and will proclaim
Fortunate is the one who
Owns an attire of lightwoven thread
One who receives the
rays of the soul's Sun
Don't suppose that they have
The bird of fortune has cast its shadow on them.
Know that the pharaoh destroying Moses lives in this town
You cannot see it
But he has his staff
He can reach the signs of the heavens
Where the lovers heart points is the object of faith
The sorrow the beloved may create
Is completely forgivable

Why am I here?
My thoughts linger by day and I wonder by night
Why am I not heeding my innermost nature (of light)?
Where do I come from and why
If you don't show me the way, where will I end up?
Frozen in awe, why did He create me?
Or what was His goal in my creation?
(What is my mission?)

You are my celebration
shining like the moon
You reside in my heart
And light it from within
Friends are all around us, yes
But only You truly care
People are happy for the New Year
And celebrate the holidays
But today it is You
who
Are truly my New Year
My celebration .

Let's all sit and share stories - ode 1671
Draft
Let's pick a topic to discuss:
Whether happiness or sorrow
Let's sit in a group
and share stories
If our friend goes further
We go further still
If our friend plays [the drum] slowly
We play [the drum] slower still
We and our buddies are
one in heart; one in breath
Ferocious as fire, we attack the ranks of the bravest of heroes
We are no less men if we ride alone

Once again we rise above - ode 1600
Once again we find ourselves
And rise above --
passion, reason and mundane life
When the lover comes to our midst
We are no longer there, in that midst
from annihilation, we turn away
and into the fabric of Being, we interweave
We find the One, who leaves no signs
And thus we rise, above, all signs
We sweep dust, off the ocean and
Gather smoke, from the heavens ;
Beyond Time, above the earth and
the heavens, we rise
Beware! For here come the Drunk
Make way! Make way!
I'm not mistaken when I say
We rise above
both Path and Guide.
