Yours is the reviving breath of Christ

Lovers cannot control
their urge for the search
But there is no one in the world
Beyond Him who is searching
This world and the other
both come from one essence
Reality is beyond blasphemy,
Beyond religion and beyond clan
Yours is the reviving breath of Christ
Don't even breathe of leaving me
I serve the One
who is Spontaneous
I'll go back if you want me too
But you don't go back
And if you say go forth
I will tell you there is no path ahead
Open your arms and
take care of yourself
The cure for this pain
Lies in the pain itself
All good and bad ones
Consider themselves to be dervishes
Whoever is not so
Is not a true dervish
Whoever has left their place
Will find a place in the heart
There is no place in this world
That compares to the heart

The drunken moonlight music band

Dec 17 is the night Rumi passed away about 800 years ago and left the world drunk with his worldview. We honor him with a translation of a profoundly spiritual ghazal from his Book of Shams.

Here is a orchestral performance of this ghazal : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDKBW2ihjrE
from minutes 1:44 to 8:00

Last night, under the moonlight, I spotted a band, in the distance, all drunk
[I saw infants drunk, the old drunk the lute player all drunk
The moon had given the sky a cup from that vat of wine
The moon was drunk, the sun drunk, shadows and light, all drunk
When the fragrance of that wine reached the garden'
the grass went drunk, the stream went drunk, the branches, vines and grapes, all drunk
Heaven drank a cup given by the Winegiver of the Covenant
so the heavens were drunk, the earth drunk, limbo and all the beings in them, all drunk
music came from a king's feast, serving half warmed wine making
the crown drunk, the throne drunk, Caesar and Chinese Emperors, all drunk
a group of Sufis sat deep in the state of Transcendence
their outer coats drunk, their shirts, their belongings, all drunk,
on another side the Angels gathered, Gabriel was the Winegiver
the heavens drunk, the tree in seventh heaven,  judgment day and the herald , all drunk
Shams [my Master] was affected by one such cup
So he must be drunk; as a rule drunks can't be held responsible for secrets they divulge!

Thanksgiving feels even better than receiving

The winter's cold pressed hard upon the dog
The cold's wound hurt his skin bad

So much that he thought to himself
I'll build myself a house of stone
As soon as summer comes within my grasp
I'll avoid the cold with a house of stone
But when summer came, it expanded
his bones and his skin was relaxed
I won't really fit in a stone house
he thought as he felt himself strong and healthy
He chose to pull himself into the
shade and rest enjoying his healthy strong body
His heart said go build a house brother
But he replied to himself, I won't really fit
In times of pain, your bones of greed
will also grind and hurt when you move
And you promise yourself you'll build a house
if only the cold harsh winter would pass
But when you feel better and strong, like the dog
your strong desire to build the house will weaken
Giving thanks for blessings is sweeter yet that the blessing itself;
a thanker will not gravitate towards the blessings
Thanks is the soul of the blessings and the blessing is the skin
For giving thanks will bring you close to the Friend's house
Blessings may bring complacence
Thanksgiving wakes you up!

Catch blessings using the snare
Of thanking the King
Thanksgiving brings blessings
Fullness and abundance

So you can bless the less
fortunate a hundred times

If you feed on the sweets and food of Truth
You will be cured of gluttony and guile

The Sign of Love

Rumi, Spiritual Couplets Book 1
Translated by Ali Arsanjani, in Rumi’s Guide for Lovers and Spiritual Seekers,

The sign of love can be seen in sheer helplessness of heart
Love is a sickness to which no other malady compares
You can tell that the lover’s sickness is of a different kind

Do you want to find God’s secrets? Love is your compass.
Some loves are mild, Some starts fickle, some start wild
They may settle right here, somewhere near
Some loves travel miles to unlikely places far from here

But in the end all loves guide you to the Ultimate Love.
When I seek, however much, to use words to describe it
I end up embarrassed for even trying,
when I in speechless awe, encounter love

“Explain away!”, you say? Explanations are helpful
But all they do is mystify, never do they clarify
That’s why I’ll settle only for the clearest of all: Speechless Love

Trying too fast, in effort to write, my pen ended up in midflight
encountering love and at first sight, it  burst apart
Struggling hard to elaborate on this, my intellect sunk

deeper yet in the quicksand  of thoughts
for the story of love can only be told by Love.

Thanks be to the Nonbeing that stole our being

Come dance

The spring of lives has arrived
Oh newly sprouted branch
Come dance
When Joseph returns to Egypt and all is sweet again
Come dance
You, the love nurturing king
Are like mother's milk
Escape the milk boiler my dear
And come dance!
You roll in like a ball
And seeing the locks of hair playing polo
You cut yourself free of those locks and the feet that bind you
Without care for head or feet
Come dance !

Where was the light of your face yesterday

You who are the candle that illuminates the entire world :
Yesterday your light was not shining in our midst
Tell me where was the light of your face yesterday - where was it? Where?
