I am the union of opposites

In devotion,  I breathe as the birds do
In their love of Solomon

In love, I adore the magical creatures
For I call upon them as a magical person

The one with more magical traits
I will catch first and save
And chant their special incantations

I'm mesmerized, by this incident
I have both gained sharp intellect ,
And have lost it too

I' m vocal and I'm speechless
I 'm the sacred tablet of the silent

I'm shouting out for that multicolored beloved
Is no longer the same with me now
I' shouting out for I know
Nothing but this state of shouting out

I am the beads on that beautiful Locke of hair
How colorless I seem in contrast to that color

I am a moth to that candleflame
How scattered and distraught I feel my Lord

Why are you different today
My moonlike beloved one?
Replied : don't look upon her
I see through human eyes

My friend if you are a true man
Then why do you bring shaky vacillation?

My being will be filled with smoke
From the fire of your greed

O lover! Either transcend the relative
Or unravel yourself from our side!

Don't create a veil in yourself
So I don't have to create one

I am both blood and I am milk
I am both old and I am an infant

I am both a servant and a Lord
I am both this and I am also that!

I am both the sweet nectar giving Shams
And the homeland of Tabriz

I am both the Winegiver, and the drunk
The popular one and the unmanifest!

Come let's go to the flower field , come

Come let's go back to the flower field
Let's pivot around this point of luck like a compass

Come for as luck would have it, today that we are victorious
Let's circle around the beloved like new lovers

We are sown many seeds as we have searched this vast wasteland
If our love cannot contain itself, we will return to the storage silo

Leave behind those faces who turn away from you in bitterness
For in the end they are all ugly anyway
Let's turn to the pleasant  face of our faithful companion

If we are upset at ourselves
We will be subject to

I saw Angels knocking on the tavern door

Yesterday I saw angels knocking on the tavern door
Measured and crafted the mud used to create Man

The inhabitants of the realm of secrecy and purity
Drank cups of wine with me the homeless wonderer

The sky could not bear the weight of responsibility
So as luck would have it, the random draw fell on me , the crazy one
The drawn out war between the seventy- two nations was used as an  excuse
Since they could not see the truth they chose the way of the fairy tale
Thank God that peace fell between us
Rejoicing this the dancing Sufis drank in gratitude
Fire is not just something that the candle laughs at its flame
Fire is that which lights up to the flocks of butterflies
No one has taken off the mask of Reason as has Hafez

Who combs the fragrant beautiful hair of verse with the comb of his pen

What can the moon reflect but the grace of the sun

What can you expect from sugar
But sweetness and grace ?
What can you expect from the moon
But reflecting, dividing and delivering light ?
What can arise from the flower meadow
Except heart soothing colors ?
What can spring from a greenwet branch
But leaves and blossoms?
What destiny can you expect from Jupiter expect auspiciousness?

This Round I am Suddenly Wrapped in Love -- Ode 1372

I find myself suddenly wrapped in Love this round
This round I find myself suddenly ignoring Prudence

Having torn my own heart out, I'm alive from that Some Other
For I have completely burnt Intellect, Emotion and Thought

Tell the people, tell then now, dont expect me to be a good people person anymore
What I have thought about, what I have conceived of in my heart, even the craziest among you have never thought.

The crazy have sprinkled stars and fled in seeing my ecstatic state
I have jumped straight into Oblivion, into Nothingness, I have mingled with death.

Today my mind and intellect hate me all of a sudden
And wishes to frighten me, thinking I have not witnessed.

How would I be afraid of it? I have created that image myself for the mind!
How can I be confused ? I who have confused the hunter, so.

I am beyond the sphere of stars, and don't rely on blood flowing anymore
I have licked many a bowl for the beggar faced ones

In that moment

In that moment

--------------------------------------
A nafas, is a breath. If is taken to signify the duration it takes you to take half a breath , or an infinitesimally short duration.

I have coined the term breath moment to signify the moment or duration it takes to take half a breath, either in or out.

Being only with you, focused on your self alone, the lower, petty self is one possibility

And being completely absorbed into the higher self , being Selfless is a state of consciousness , pure consciousness, with the Self alone , not focused on or with the small self

Rumi characterizes the states of ba-khod and bee-khod. The first is to be with yourself focused on your lower, petty self . The second is to be selfless or losing the petty self to the higher Self, thus bee-khod is a state of transcendence beyond the mental focus on the affairs of a mortal , everyday self .

Those are the two states Rumi compares in this ode.

----------------------------------

In that moment of breath
When you are with you
The beloved may seem like a thorn
And in that moment
When you are unselfaware
What use is your beloved to you?
In that moment when you are focused on yourself
You are the prey of even a mosquito
And during that moment where you are without yourself , with no awareness of the petty self,
you will be the hunter of even elephants
When you are focused on yourself
You are merely a cloud packing sorrow and regret
And in that moment when you are without Self the moon will come to your side
In that moment when you are focused on yourself alone
The beloved will retreat and avoid you
And in that breathmoment
The beloved's wine flows to you
In that breath when you are with you
You grow depressed like autumns falling leaves
And in that breath moment when you transcend yourself (and are with the Self)
Autumn will feel like spring to you
All your restlessness stems from
Your trying for being settled
Seek the restless thoughts until your mind settles down and you will have peace
Your indigestions arise from your
Trying to digest all these experiences
But if you stop trying to digest all these experiences , even poison would become an elixir for you
Your aimlessness stems from your relentless goal-seeking
Seek not and all you seek will be delivered to you
Fall in love with the beloved's meanness
Don't seek the kindness of the beloved
That's how you can get the hard to get beauty to fall hopelessly in love with you
When shams-e-din arrives like king khosro of the east
By God, in comparison, being granted the moon and the stars will appear insignificant

The Sufi's Creed

The Sufi's Creed

Ghazal 378 from Hafez

Translated in collaboration with Maryam Daftari

We don't speak ill of anyone nor are we inclined to any injustice

We don't smear anyone nor do we sully ourselves

We don't apply sophistical arguments to misrepresent scientific analysis

We don't mix divine secrets with cheap magic

We don't find any degree of fault with the poor or with the rich

We absolutely don't find it in anyone's interest to do any bad deed

We don't rely on the momentary calm of this suspended ocean of heaven

Not to shatter the ship of the master artists

If a friend is offended or someone speaks badly in envy

we would tell you to move on and be happy, for we ignore what idiots say

Hafez even if our enemy speaks in error we wouldn't confront them (we won't take issue)

And if they do speak fairly, we won't quarrel with the Truth
