Tell me dont hide - what did you have last night

what did you drink last night, o heart of mine
tell me, don't hide the truth
don't turn your face to the sky
in fake innocence!
that special wine, the sweets that release
from bondage, which one did you have?
the smell of wine comes strong
don't eat melon to cover it up!
In the day of the covenant,
your soul drank a wine of greatness
you are the master of the Void
don't be a servant to space and place
last night you poured the wine
but fled from my side
but i caught up with you
don't run away again!
I am taken by the awe,
drunk with the wine of devotion
I am straight as an arrow with you
Do not put me back in your quiver
The remedy of this torn heart
is only in seeing you
Don't rely on this world,
To Him I seek refuge
He is my rock and my foundation

Each person is like a bamboo flute
I hear your cry, your voice coming through them
You are cultured in Listening
Don't touch the flute of the soul - let it sing

You breathed and  blew to bring the cry of
their flute
Your breath is the soul of the flute
Don't cry when hear this

The Paradox of the way of the heart

Shams of Tabriz - what is this paradox in the way of the heart?
Both residing in love and yet exiled from love

I long for you

March 20, 2014

I long for the flower garden so show your face
I long for the depths of sweetness so open your beautiful lips

Remove that mask of clouds, O Sun!  Show me your face!
I long for that bright shining face

When I listened to the sound of the drum, I heard a sign from you
I long to see the hand of the ruler --  that is why I am here again

You’ve told me out of mischief: don’t bother me anymore! Go away!
I long for hearing you tell me to go away, to not bother you anymore

I long to see you bite your lip and say : "go! the King is not here in this house!"
I long for your mischief,  your pretension , your scolding , you sending me away

I've come again

Here I am, back from the beloved !
I've come again! I've come again!
I 'm here to share your sorrows
Look at me now! Look deep inside !

Here I am freed from all
I come filled with joy , filled with joy!
It took thousands of years for me to break this silence

I will ascend! I was up so far!
I'll go there again! I will ascend again!
I came back here, oh, so reluctantly!
Release me now ! Release me once again !

Although I walk among you now
I was once a heavenly bird!
I didn't see it and fell right into the trap !

I'm not just a fleeting handful of earth
Brother, I am pure clean light.
I came as a king arrives
But you see me as a pearl inside an oyster

Don't look at me with mere eyes
See me as I am with your secret eye
I arrive with the lightest of  loads
You must come see me there

Although I've come here for a visit
There I was precious , unmanifest
My friend is here with us in the market
Nimble and deep in awareness He comes

If not to pay Him my dues
Why would I ever come here?
My master Shams - when are you going
To grace the entire world with your gaze?

For my thoughts and vitality have been
wandering in the wastelands of oblivion .

The old harp player praises God

He cried, O wonderful Lord
I beg you stop, don't embarrass me more
He cried much and felt much pain
He cast the lute down on the earth
And said this has been my
veil from the Lord
You have been a highway robber
You sucked me dry for seventy years
You embarrassed me in front of Pure Excellence

O my gracious, loyal Lord
Have mercy on my wasted years

The Lord of Truth bestowed us with a life
every day of which
Noone knows the true worth
in this world

I have spent every moment of my life
I have sung with a pitch that went up and down

The Lover’s Malady

This translation from the first book of Rumi's spiritual couplets extracts the essence of his perception of the malady of the Lover. He portrays it in a story where a King falls in love with a Handmaiden and brings her to his palace to love, only to find she is getting sicker by the day. After much introspection and praying for Divine grace for help, a non-worldly physician comes and discovers

The Lover’s Malady

He realized, her sickness was of heart
Her body was fine; she fell sick from love

Love is apparent, from desperation of heart
Nothing compares to the ailment of Love

The malady of the lover, is of a different sort
Love is the compass, through the secrets of God

No matter the reason that kindles our Love
It will finally lead, to the transcendent realm

Try as I may to explain it away
Still I am chagrined when I arrive at Love

[Whatever I say to try to explain and describe love]
[When I come to love, I am chagrined of it]

Expressive words, are insightful to us
Yet speechless love is clearest of all

As the pen rushed forth, eager to write
When it came upon love, it broke apart

Thrashing to explain, the mind is mired in mud

Love and the Lover, explainable only through Love

Note: The He, is the divinely sent physician , the "I" later in the poem is Rumi teaching us that love is to be felt, not described and explained intellectually. he uses the metaphor of love being an ailment, not a bad one, but one of a different kind/sort/type. That Love is an astrolabe (used to help find a ships position within the starry firmament and thus navigate it to its goal), a "compass" that helps us navigate through the divine secrets and mysteries.

We may think that love is petty or too mundane and that the true love is divine love: maybe. But Rumi reminds us that any type of love is "good" and no matter the reason that kindled your love, this will gradually lead you onward to experience more refined, subtle and elevated levels of experiencing love, ultimately to the "other realm" the spirtual, transcendent world.

"I have been explaining away" but in reality, "however hard I try" , I am embarrassed at the failure of trying to explain something that cannot be intellectually contained and described in its totality. So yes, explanations and elucidations are all well and good, but, the direct experience of Love is the clearest of all enunciations. Direct experience of the Divine is the clearest way to experience that Love of the Divine, of Uniting with the Beloved.

Many pens have made fervent but futile attempts to write about this communion. And Rumi uses this powerful imagery of the pen, rushing to try to explain Love and as soon as it arrives at that word and tries its hardest to explain it, it splits in two, it shatters, breaks part.

He likens the intellect to a donkey who is mired in mud and thrashes in an effort to get out and the harder it struggles the more mired it gets, until it has to lay there for the night, in the mud and sleep.

Ultimately, it is the experience of Love that can only explain Love and the state of the Lover.

Be a Lover

Let go of everything associated with being the beloved, be a lover

You think highly of yourself -  that you can overcome anything
As far as inner meaning is concerned you are quieter than the night
For how long are you going to try to sell yourself?
They nod their heads when they are in your presence
They forget about you when they are away
