Is There Any Benefit?

 

- Ode 389- غزل شمارهٔ ۳۸۹

 

چون دلت با من نباشد همنشینی سود نیست

Sitting in my company, if your heart is not here, there is no benefit  

گر چه با من مینشینی چون چنینی سود نیست

Even if you keepmy company, if your thus, there is no benefit

چون دهانت بسته باشد در جگر آتش بود

Even if you appear silent, but inside your anger is a raging fire

در میان جو درآیی آب بینی سود نیست

Even if you come to the river and see the water, there is no benefit

چونک در تن جان نباشد صورتش را ذوق نیست

When the body is lifeless, the face will not shine

چون نباشد نان و نعمت صحن و سینی سود نیست

Fine trays and plates, but no bread and food: there is no benefit

گر زمین از مشک و عنبر پر شود تا آسمان

If the fragrance of musk and flowers fill the air to the sky

چون نباشد آدمی را راه بینی سود نیست

If your nose is stopped up, there is no benefit

تا ز آتش میگریزی ترش و خامی چون پنیر

So long as you flee the fire, sour and naïve like cheese

گر هزاران یار و دلبر میگزینی سود نیست

Even if you surround yourself with thousands of friends and lovers, there is no benefit
