Even though you travel without me, I am with you

You are going towards the flower garden, like a flower
Even if you are going without me
I am still with you
The Susan flower tried to describe you
And each tongue became one of its hundred petals
blessed you go to the sussan flower
Your beautiful face as if a flower

My Love gifted me a golden crown - ode 1380

Yesterday my Love crowned me with a golden crown
Even if you slap me, it won't fall
The king of eternity crowned me with The hat of love He wove
So how can this hat of love ever fall off?
If the head can't remain with the hat one day
Then I will like the Moon transform myself entirely to become only head
For a gem can shine even brighter without the hook and clasp
Go ahead and test this: pick up a club and here's my head!

Give thanks and be in the presence of the Thankers

Rumi starts out by recounting a tale
Of one filled with jealousy
Which deprives one of the sense of "smell"
Here he describes the sense of smell
The "olfactory " metaphor for spiritual pursuit
The nose he says is for finding ones way
If you cannot find your way then
It's as if you have lost your sense of smell and therefore have no nose!
And if you did smell the path
And find the path but did not give thanks to the Divine
Then your sense of smell your spiritual compass will be taken away!
Give plenty of thanks and be
A humble and reverent to those you give thanks, the Thankers

In their divine presence be silent and attentive try to see what they are being and teaching , be silent and deeply collected within yourself as if you do not exist
And thus gain everlasting life!
Don't deter people from the spiritual path
Like highway robber sitting on their path
The hypocrites will preach spirituality
But are an empty shell

Call forth the ruler of the house of sweetness

Call forth the ruler of the house of sweetness
That sparkling gem that shining pearl
That incomparable ruler with the open face
that ocean hearted moon of our inner being
Who gives life to a decrepit corpse
Who gives love and affection to the stranger's heart
Who will fill the thorn's basket with flowers

You belong to me to me to me

You are my life my life my life essence
You belong to me to me to me alone
You are my king, we deserve to mingle
You are my sweet sugar cube, deserving only of my teeth
You are my light, remain here in my eyes
My eyes and the very life giving fountain of my life
When the flower saw you,
told the rose
The greatest of flowers has come to my garden
Tell me why we are apart
Why are you not here with me?
I grow sad when I don't see the curves of your beautiful hair
Your locks lock my feet
As if trapped inside that famous well
Take my hand, where are you off to?
My smiling flower, come to me !

What makes you smile like sugar?

I'm in awe of what must be going on
Inside your heart, when your smile is as sweet as sugar

?Who were you with last night
You are smiling like the dawn

It's as if the whole world
Smiles when it receives your life bestowing breath

In the jasmine garden of wonder
You blossom and smile like the stars

With the fire emanating from your face
You set ablaze the temple of idols

you sat within that fire, smiling like gold
You emerged drunk and smiling from the tavern of God
You laugh at the good and bad of the world

Come, let's be lovers once again! Ode 1832

Come, let's be lovers once again!
Blanket this earthly world in gold
Come let's be the new blossomed spring of love
Feel the fragrance of musk and amber in the breeze
Engulf the earth, the mountains, the fields and
flower gardens and even our inner vitality
Let's dress in bright green colors
Let's open a store of blessings and bounty from within
Let's learn how to behave from the green nourished tree

I can pass the times without anyone, but cannot do so without you

I can pass the times without anyone, but cannot do so without you
My heart and soul are burning for you, nobody else soothes it

My mind's eye is drunk with you, the turning of the wheels of time are for you

Our life force bubbles and boils from you, our heart experiences joy through you
the intellect roars because of you, and we cannot continue without you

I drank from that wine that can't be confined in a glass

I drank from that wine
that can't be confined in a glass

The Question -- Every Day I Ponder

Every day I ponder and at night, these thoughts linger…
Why am I remiss about how I feel deep inside my heart?

Where do I come from? Why was I brought here?
Where am I finally going, if you don't show me my homeland?

I am in wondrous awe: for how did He create me?
Or, for what purpose …?

I know I come from the Unseen, certainly…
I will shed my clothes there once again.

I am not from this world of dust; I am a bird from the Garden of Heaven
A bird that created a cage of this body, but for a few days

Glorious be the day that I fly to the Friend
To flutter around His head and flap my wings

Who is this in my ear, who hears, my song?
Or who is it who speaks through my mouth?

Who is it that is gazing out, through my eyes?
Or who is the Soul to whom I am a shirt?

Until You lead me and show me, beyond doubt, the way to my homeland
I will not rest for an instant, and waste not even a breath

Give me a taste of the wine of union, so that,
In the prison of Eternity, my drunken cry will shatter that silence

I didn't come here on my own volition to be able to return on my own
He who brought me will again lead me back to my homeland

Don't think I am constructing these verses on my own
While I remain conscious and aware, I will not rest for a breath

[My dear master,] Shams of Tabriz, if you don't show me your face
I swear to God, I will shatter my already dead heart !

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know I come from the Unseen, certainly

[My dear master, ] Shams of Tabriz, if you don't show me your face

I swear to God, I will shatter my already dead heart !

Father's Day

The elephant stood in a dark house
the Indians were putting him on display
many people came to see it
into that darkness entered many
who could not see the elephant with the eye
in that darkness had to feel with their hands
one felt the trunk
He said :"This is line a rain spout"

Dad said: "Would it hurt if
you once listened to father's advice?"

The Beloved found me again

That capricious Beloved found me once again,
though appeared to be wandering drunk, found me, in the market,
saw me, while I hid from those heavy laden drunk tulip eyes
found me, after I fled from the wine house
why am i fleeing? if from the beloved noone fears
why i a hiding? if the beloved has found me a hundred times...
I thought to myself: "Who will find me in this crowded city?"
The One who found me, even in the densest of secrets
Good tidings: that Beloved seeks me out
Good fortune : that Ravishing Beauty seeks me out
Stole my hat when I was drunk and kept it ransom
so I could follow and find the Beloved, clue by clue
I took the thorn out of my hand thus
that high majestic pine tree of the flower garden found me
sprinkled flower petals uponn my head from His flower garden
that rare singing nightingale sought me out again
i sought to hide from the light of the harvest moon
today found me*, with a moonlight indoors
drops of my blood can be found on countless ways to the beloved
The Beloved sought me out, looking for clues
like a fawn I fled from the Lion to fields
that hunting Lion found me in the mountains

* I sometimes use "Him, His " etc to denote the Beloved. But in Persian (Farsi) that part of speech is gender neutral, so in indirectly referring to God as the Beloved, Rumi speaks not of His or Her, so I am experimenting with leaving that part of speech out. Instead of "His garden", I just translate as "garden." because there is no actual "His" in the original.

Once again my capricious Beloved found me,
Appeared to be wandering drunk, I fled to the market, but found me.

Saw me, as I hid from those heavy-laden, drunk, tulip eyes.
Found me, after I fled from the wine house.

Why do I bother to flee? If noone fears the Beloved…
Why do I bother to hide? If the Beloved has found me a hundred times...

For I thought: "Who would find me in this crowded town?"
The same One, who had found me, even when
I was veiled within the densest of secrets.

Good tidings then: the Beloved seeks me out!
Good fortune then: that Ravishing Beauty seeks me out!

Stole my hat when I was drunk and kept it ransom
so I would follow and find the Beloved, clue by clue.

I took the thorn out of my hand- thus and
that majestic Pine Tree of the flower garden found me
and sprinkled flower petals upon my head
from His flower garden.

Again, that rare, sweet-voiced nightingale
sought me out, as I tried to hide from
the light of the harvest moon.
Even indoors, found me*, with indoor moonlight.

Drops of my blood were found along the countless paths to the Beloved
The Beloved had sought me out, looking for clues
Like a fawn I fled from the Lion to the fields
That ferocious hunter Lion found me hiding in the mountains.

You bring me back to life; you bring joy back to me

I was dead; now I've alive
I was in tears; now I'm laughing
The power of Love came to me
and I gained everlasting Power
My senses content; I crave nothing,
My soul is now courageous
I have the courage of a lion
Like Venus, emanate light
He said, "truly you have not lost enough of your sanity!"
"No longer do you deserve to be in this house"
I went and became
a madman with chains and all
He said you are not drunken ought
Leave for you are not one of us
So I went and found the meaning of being drunk with my whole being and I was teeming with joy
He said you are not prepared to give
Your life
You are not drowning in bliss
When i saw his life giving face
I was prepared to lay my life down

You are all guile and immersed in doubt and concerns
So I became as if ignorant and corrected my ways and disconnected myself from people
he said you have become the shining light and leader of this gathering
But I objected , I am not the light nor the header , here, I will become smoke
Dispersing everywhere
You pointed out that I am a leader
Leading the way
I am nolonger a leader not out in front
Anymore
I yield to your command
You told me I have aspiring wings
So you will not give me new wings ti fly
so I shed my feathers and left my wings
Desiring those that He would give
You pointed out that I should not succumb to new promises of power and position and not fret over them
And I through your Grace and benevolence will be coming to you
You told me not to recount tales of old

love
He said : stop telling me tales of old love
To which I replied
Yes I will not
And became still with Being
I won't I said ; I became still and established in Being

My heart gained those lifegiving rays
My heart opened up and widened

If you are a lover, let go of sorrow

If you are a lover, let go of sorrow

If you are a lover, let go of sorrow,
See the joy of weddings and let go of grief.

Be the Ocean and launch the ship,
Be the World and let go the world.

Search for heaven as does the repentant man,
Release thoughts of deep wells and human prisons.

Soar on clouds just like Jesus son of Mary,
And just like him, Forget about the donkey*.

If mesmerized by Joseph you cut your hand**,
Hold the wound and forget about the ointment.

And if those tussled locks should wake you up,
Forget about those unreal fantasies.

Remember "I have breathed my Soul into you",
Forget about having more or less sorrow!

O lion-born! Behave like a lion now!
Forget about those wandering unknown wolves.

The greedy are bloodied like fighting wolves,
Leave them, they are wounded by greed.

For greed will inflict a similar wound,
On all those who fall for its deception.

Leave speech; instead remember the Name of God,
Leave the divine attribute of "All-knowing"

When the oracle brings forth Shams of Tabriz
Quick! Release yourself from oppressing bondage.

If you are a lover, let go of sorrow
see the weddings and relieve  grieve
be the Ocean and launch the ship
be the World and let go of the world
like the repentent man go towards heaven
release thoughts of the deep well and human prisons
Like Jesus son of Mary, whirl on clouds
forget about the donkey
and if in the love of Joseph you cut your hand
hold the wound and forget about the ointment
and if those tussled locks awoke you
forget about your convoluted dreams and fantasies
"I have breathed my Soul into you" has come
Let go of more sorrow and less sorrow!

O lion-born! Adopt the temperament of a lion now!
Leave the dogs who are unknown

The greedy are bloodied like wolves
leave those who are flea-ed and wounded through greed

For greed will inflict a similar wound

Stop speaking
Speak the Name of God, leave the divine attribute of "All-knowing"

When the oracle brings forth Shams
Release yourself from oppressing bondage

You are a trap so birds will flee you: go become a nest, become a next!
Should the Beloved show Face, fill yourself with the Beloved like a mirror
And if the Beloved opens locks of hair,  become  the comb, become the comb
Until when do you want to be moving only in two directions like the Rook**?
Until when like a pawn, moving only one square?
Until when crooked moving like the Knight***?
Go become a sage, become a sage!

* Hannaneh: the name of a wooden pillar in the mosque where the Prophet would lean on when he would deliver sermons, while the pulpit was being built. When the pulpit was finally built, the wooden pillar of Hannaneh is said to have signed and audibly moaned the fact that the Prophet would nolonger lean against it!

**Rook or castle: refers to chess pieces.
***Knight or Hourse in chess.

Seek warmth only from that burning inner desire - Ode 2943

Seek warmth- only- from that burning inner desire,
the enlightened heart is never lit from an external fire!

The ailing suffer, so the Unmanifest King can come to their heart
expand it with Grace, and ask, "are you doing well?"

The deer musk and the locks of the beloved's hair:
seek them only through subtle decrease-- never increase!

His love says, it is either you or I: one of us must go!
Don't be static while you are in motion and rest.

The heart knows the soul's secrets, even if it hurts.
Then, the flustered ego will no longer make mistakes.

When sorrow squeezes you hard, making you want to come out of yourself
That's when Light will shine on you, from the flowing firmament.

Sit, even through pain; every moment see the Friend,
why are you so forlorn, searching for another magic?

Tabriz, you enrich our Lives, like Shams you give it Truthfulness,
Good fortune has always come from Him-  not just now!

Thanks to A. Norouzifar for the ghazal and J. Magram for asking for a translation.

The Sound of the Words of Love

There is no sweeter memory,
          Everlasting,
          in
          this turn-
                ing
         firmament
                than the sound
                                    of the words
                                                       of Love...

Motherly Love

All the injustices, pains and sorrows of love
grew sweet, like Motherly love only can.

You bring me back to Life -- Ode 1393

I was dead. You brought me back to life.
My being, once teemed with tears, you changed them into laughter.
As the Power of Love came forth, I gained Everlasting Power.
My senses are content; my soul, brimming with courage.
The courage of a lion. Like Venus -- I shine forth.

He said, "Begone! You haven’t lost your sanity and no longer deserve to be in this house!"
So, I went .  I grew  insane with love, chains and all and I returned.

He said,"Leave! You are not drunk enough; not one of us!"
So, I left. When I found the meaning of being drunk with my whole being,
overwhelmed with joy, I returned.

He said,"What? Are you not prepared to give your life – to melt  your being in bliss?"
And then I saw His Face; I would lay down my life for that life-bestowing Face.

He said,"You are all guile; immersed in doubts and [mundane] thoughts!"
So, I became simple and ignorant; no doubts, no concerns. I corrected my ways and disconnected myself from the influence of people.

He said, "You have become the shining light and leader of this gathering!"
I objected:  "I am not the light! I am no leader  here!"
So I turned into smoke and scattered in the six directions....

I am nolonger a leader, I am not out in front , anymore
I yield to Your command !

He said,"You have aspiring wings! How can I give you new ones?"
So, I shed my feathers and left my wings, wanting  only those He would give.

"Don’t give in to new promises", He said, "Don't fret over promises of power and position."
So, through His Grace and Benevolence I drew nearer.

He said,"Don't recount tales of old love for us!"
I replied, "Yes-- I won't!" And I became still with Being.

My heart, felt those lifegiving rays of light,
My heart opened and swallowed the whole world.

Drown your soul in the ocean of Light

Posted by Picasa

What harm can come from that pattern of fright
When you drown your soul in the ocean of light
The writing pen cannot contain
the images you describe
Yet wisdom and justice
are found in those letters you write
Wisdom and justice hold
great depths of meaning
that cannot be fathomed
front or back
Which direction does it come upon us?
The Directionless.
[And hits the body from the direction of the Directionless.]
The Sun of the Soul cannot be contained even in the firmament.

The thought of your love keeps me lovedrunk

All the days, I hold the thought of your love as a desire in my mind
Immersed in your love I am drunk and restless every day
The drunk experience drunken ness only for a day
I am that drunk who remains lovedrunk Forever

What Alexander sought in vain

A poem by Hafez in which we quote this line.

That which Alexander sought in vain
And Fate did not give him
Was but a small cup of that sparkling clear, life giving jug of yours!

Love is an ocean with hidden waves

If you have any inkling of the secret of His Love
Give up your life to Love and gaze into the Beloved
Love is an ocean with hidden waves
Each wave is a gem and the ocean water is fire !
It's secrets are its gems and in ever direction from Him
Is inspired a seeker; guided to a hidden meaning

I had fallen asleep drunk last night
As the Moon cast its light in passing, Moonlight fell upon me,
Saw my yellow complexion in the bright moonlight
And made my yellow complexion wet with tears
and through Mercy He gave me the ambrosia of Unity
each hair on my head thereupon found new life of its own
Even though I had fallen drunk from wine
each one of my hairs gained a vision of their own
In the face of the Sun of both Worlds
I gazed in drunken thoughtless awe
